Women's SoccerWomen's Soccer Advances To ECAC Semifinals November 9, 2006 WATERBURY, Conn.-Behind a pair of goals from freshman Kelli Veras (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) the Post University women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division II Women's Soccer Championships with a 2-0 win over St. Vincent (Pa.), on Thursday afternoon at LaMoy Field. With the win the Eagles (11-7-3, 7-2-1 CACC) advance to the semifinals on Saturday against the number-one seed the University of Bridgeport. Post is hosting the ECAC Championships, as construction is taking place at Bridgeport's home field. The match, which was originally slated for Wednesday, but was postponed until this afternoon, to inclement weather, started out slow for both teams, as neither side had any real scoring opportunities until roughly midway through the first half, where Post put some shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. However, in the second half, the Eagles struck twice within a matter of minutes to take command of the match. Veras, who was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Year, took a cross from freshman Kaitlyn Delaney (Springfield, Mass./Sabbis) and put it past the St. Vincent goalkeeper at the 67:02 mark. The freshmen tandem was at it again almost a minute later, as Delaney fires a shot, that the keeper made, but the ball bounced off her hands, and went on the foot of Veras who banged it home to make it 2-0. Veras almost tallied a hat trick, about two minutes later, but the Eagles were whistled for an offside call. The Eagles outshot St. Vincent (9-10) 25-5, and held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. There were only 11 fouls called in the match, as the Eagles were called for six, and SVC was guilty of five. Post was called offsides twice. Post goalkeeper freshman Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) played the entire way for the Eagles, recording three saves, while SVC keeper Adrianne Groth made 12 saves. Post will meet Bridgeport (15-5-2) for the second time this season. In the first meeting the Eagles dropped a 2-0 decision to the Purple Knights in the second round of the Connecticut Cup at New Haven on August 26. Notes: The win ties the school-record for wins in a season with 11,
which was originally set by the 1996 squad that went 11-8 overall
... It was the Eagles ninth shutout of the season, and it was the
fifth time in the last six matches that Post has recorded a shutout
... Post improves its record to 7-1-3 at LaMoy Field this season
... In home games this season, Post has scored 20 goals, while
allowing only eight.
