Women's Soccer Finishes Regular Season, With 1-0 Win At Wilmington

October 20, 2006

NEW CASTLE, Del.-The Post University women's soccer team, finished the regular season with a 1-0 win on the road, Friday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. The Eagles improve to 9-6-3 overall and 7-2-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while Wilmington falls to 10-9 overall and 4-6 in the CACC.

The Eagles locked up the number-four seed in the CACC Women's Soccer Championships, and will host Dominican College on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at LaMoy Field.

With the win, Post set a school-record for conference victories in a season with seven, eclipsing the mark of six, set by the 2000 team. In only his second season at the helm of the Post women's soccer program, Head Coach Matt Micros has taken a team that went 3-11-3 overall and 3-7-2 in the CACC, last year, to a six-win improvement overall, and four-win improvement in the CACC, this season.

The Eagles broke the ice at the 56:55 mark, when freshman Kelli Veras (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) sent a cross that found the foot of freshman Kaitlyn Delaney (Springfield, Mass./Sabbis), who was all alone in front of the net. Delaney fired a shot to the right of Wilmington keeper Amanda Jenkins, for her seventh goal of the season. The assist was Veras' 11th of the season, as the three-time CACC Rookie of the Week leads the Eagles in scoring with 21 points.

The Eagle defense stifled the Wildcats the rest of the way to preserve the shutout. It was the ninth shutout of the season for the Eagles, and the sixth in their last eight matches.

Freshman Karalee Desrosiers (Granby, Mass./Granby) and freshman Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) combined for the shutout in goal for Post. Desrosiers made five saves in the first half. Carroll came on after halftime to stop three shots.

Wilmington held a 12-9 margin in shot, while the Eagles enjoyed a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, including six in the second half. Wilmington was called for 12 fouls, while the Eagles were whistled for seven. Post was called for three offside, and Wilmington was caught once.

The field for the 2006 CACC Women's Soccer Championships will be officially determined on Saturday, as the Georgian Court-Philadelphia contest, carries major implications on the top three spots in the tournament.

If Philadelphia University wins, they will be the number-one seed, followed by Holy Family and Georgian Court. However, if Georgian Court wins, Holy Family will be the top-seed, followed by Georgian Court, and Philadelphia.

In the regular season, the Eagles defeated the Chargers 2-1, thanks to a goal and an assist by Veras.
