Women's SoccerTwo Second Half Goals Lift Women's Soccer To CACC Semifinals October 23, 2006 WATERBURY, Conn.-Junior Shannon Firetto (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) and freshman Kaitlyn Delaney (Springfield, Mass./Sabbis) each had a goal and assist, as the number-four seed Post University women's soccer team, defeated the number-five seed Dominican College, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Soccer Championships, on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field. With the win, the Eagles (10-6-3, 7-2-1 CACC) will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at Felician College's Tryon Field. Post will face the number-one seed Philadelphia University, at 1 p.m. "I thought we really played our most complete game as a team today," Head Coach Matt Micros said. "Julie (Persico), and Maria (Krug) played really well, especially tracking back to the ball, and our backs played really well in keeping them off the scoreboard. It was a total team effort." In the first half, the Eagles had two quality chances to score, as Firetto headed a shot that hit the top of the crossbar. She had another scoring opportunity later in the half, but sent it just high of the goal. In the second half, Dominican (6-11-2, 5-4-1 CACC) had a good look at the goal on a corner kick, but freshman Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) came out to grab the ball in mid-air. The Eagles were finally able to put a goal on the board at the 74:22 point, when freshman Katie Sabal (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) found Firetto just to the right of Dominican goalkeeper Valentina Sturchio, and fired it past to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. A cross from Delaney off a corner kick set up the play. "I blew a few chances in the first half," Firetto said following the match. "And I said to myself that the next time I had the opportunity I had to do it, not only for myself, but for our team." Post found the back of the net about two minutes later, as junior Maria Krug (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) set the ball up field, and after getting deflected from a defender, found the foot of Firetto, who set up and ripped a cross to Delaney who one-timed it past Sturchio to make it 2-0. Carroll and freshman Karalee Desrosiers (Granby, Mass./Granby) combined to record the shutout for the Eagles. Desrosiers made one save in the first half, and Carroll stopped two shots, and came out to grab a corner kick away from the Chargers. Sturchio made four saves in goal for Dominican. The Eagles outshot the Chargers 18-3 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Dominican was whistled for 10 fouls while the Eagles were called for five. Post was called offsides five times, while Dominican was not called for any offsides in the match. Post will tangle with Philadelphia in the semifinals on Wednesday, while Georgian Court will meet Holy Family in the other semifinal. Georgian Court defeated Goldey-Beacom 1-0 in the other quarterfinal match on Monday. The Eagles defeated Philadelphia 1-0, in double overtime on October 14. Notes: The win was the Eagles 10th
of the season, which is second all-time for wins at Post ... The
Eagles have recorded shutouts in each of their last four matches
(3-0-1) ... Post is unbeaten in eight of its last nine matches, and
11 of its last 13 matches dating back to September 14 ... The
Eagles improve to 6-1-3 at LaMoy Field this season ... Post is
making its second consecutive appearance in the CACC Championships,
since a five-year drought.
