Women's Soccer Earns Berth In CACC Championships With 1-0 Win Over Philadelphia

October 14, 2006

WATERBURY, Conn.-Freshman Kelli Veras (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) gave the Post University women's soccer a 1-0 double-overtime win, over Philadelphia University, on a cool and sunny Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

The festive day, which included a carnival as part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities, adjacent to LaMoy Field extended to the soccer pitch, as the Eagles (8-6-2, 6-2 CACC) garnered a berth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships. A loss or a tie by Wilmington against Dominican on Saturday, will assure the Eagles a home match in the opening round of the championships on Monday, Oct. 23.

The Eagles are unbeaten in six of its last seven matches at LaMoy Field this season, and snap Philadelphia's (11-4-1, 8-1 CACC) 19 game conference unbeaten streak. Philadelphia was ranked seventh in the latest New England Region Poll.

As time was winding down in the second extra session, Philadelphia was called for a foul, just to the left of the box. This set up a free kick, which was taken by freshman Julie Persico (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) who kicked it back to sophomore Jackie Sutton (Dryden, N.Y./Tompkins-Cortland C.C.).

Sutton then ripped a shot that Veras headed into the back of the net for the game-winner. It was the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week's fifth goal of the season, and second game-winning goal. She now leads the team in scoring with five goals and 10 assists for 20 points. Persico and Sutton each record their second assists of the season.

Freshman Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) freshman Karalee Desrosiers (Granby, Mass./Granby) combined for the sixth shutout of the season for the Eagles. Carroll stopped three shots including one in the extra session, while Desrosiers made one save in the first half.

Philadelphia goalkeeper Sara Hall made 11 saves, while going the distance.

Post outshoot Philadelphia 18-6, and held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Philadelphia was whistled for 16 fouls while the Eagles were called for only seven. Post was called offsides three times.

The Eagles will gear up for the CACC Championships with Caldwell College on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at LaMoy Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
