Bentley Nips Women's Soccer, 2-1 In Overtime

August 29, 2007

WATERBURY, Conn.-Bridget O'Malley scored two goals, including the game-winner in the first overtime session, to give Bentley College a 2-1 win over the Post University women's soccer team on a hot Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

O'Malley lofted a floater from the top of the penalty box that went just past the hands of Post (0-3) goalkeeper junior Morgan Luschenat, to break at 1-1 tie in the 97th minute of play, and give Bentley (3-0) the win.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, as Meg Shea sent a shot in from the right side of the box, that O'Malley was able to head into the back of the net.

The score would remain that way, until the 49th minute, when freshman Rachel Shivers scored her first collegiate goal. Shivers a Vernon, Conn. native took a pass from fellow freshman Susan Curran, and fired a shot from the left side of the penalty box, knotting the match at 1-1.

Despite a few good chances, neither team could muster up enough offense, as the score would remain 1-1, at the end of regulation.

In the extra session, O'Malley broke the tie, by gaining control of the ball at the top of the penalty box, from a Post defender, and lofting a floater just passed the fingertips of Luschenat.

For the second consecutive match, Luschenat recorded double-digit save total, as she stopped 11 shots on the afternoon, including seven in the opening stanza. Bentley keeper Kara Smith had one save.

Bentley outshot the Eagles 23-7, while each team took two corner kicks. The Falcons committed seven fouls, while Post was whistled for four. The Eagles also had the only offsides call in the match.

Post travels to St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. match. The Eagles return to LaMoy Field on Wednesday, Sept. 5, as in-state rival Southern Connecticut State comes to town.
