Women's Basketball Falls In Home Opener

WATERBURY, Conn.-Four Post University women's basketball players had double-digits, as the Eagles fell to New York Tech, 71-61, Tuesday evening, in the first game of the season at the Drubner Center.

With the win, the Bears improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-2.

Junior Stephanie Goss (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) had a game-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She also controlled eight caroms and had three steals. Goss has scored in double figures in each game for Post this season.

Junior Cortensia "Coco" Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Kingsborough C.C.) recorded her first double-double as an Eagle with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds. Senior Natasha Box (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.) also had her first double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior LaToya Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.) also had 11 points for the Eagles.

NYIT was led by Lauren Caggiano who had 15 points and 18 rebounds, to lead four players in double-digits. Emily Bolling had 14 points, while Brittany Smith had 11 points, and Sarah Vivonetto added 10.

Post jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead thanks to a lay-up from Davis and a trey from Coley. Coley added another three-pointer to put the Eagles up 8-4.

However, the Bears would take a 14-12 lead with a lay-up by Nicole Mathews at the 12:55 mark. The Eagles were able to keep it close going into the locker room trailing by only five points at 35-30.

In the second half, with NYIT leading 40-30 at the 17:24 mark, Post whittled the lead to 45-42, with a 12-5 run capped by a jump shot from Coley with 12:15 left in the half.

NYIT received a trey from Vivonetto, then freshman Elizabeth Johnson (Manchester, Conn./N.F.A) bucket cut the lead to 50-46, but a 9-2 run by the Bears made it 59-48 with 7:26 left in the contest.

Stephanie Goss leads the team with 15.0 points per game through two games ... She also leads the team with 15 rebounds (7.5 per game) ... Natasha Box is second on the team with 7.0 per game, and Cortensia Davis is third with 5.0 rpg ... Tonight's game was the first home game for Head Coach Tracey Garofalo who graduated for the Eagles in 2002 and is the all-time leading scorer with 1,510 points.
