Women's Basketball Falls In First Game Of The Season

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.-Junior Stephanie Goss had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead the Post University women's basketball team, in the first game of the 2007-08 season, Thursday evening against Merrimack College at the Volpe Center.

Goss also had seven rebounds and was 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Merrimack (1-0) beat the Eagles 81-38, on 28 points from Amanda Shannon and 19 points from Casey Miller.

The Warriors connected on 52.4 percent (33-63) from the field, including 53.3 percent (16-30) in the second half. Meanwhile, Post had a cold shooting night, converting on only 24.1 percent (14-58) from the field, and went 0-for-5 from three-point range.

Merrimack also held a 45-34 margin on the boards, but Post outrebounded them on the offensive glass 16-12.

Both teams combined for 51 turnovers (26 Post, 25 Merrimack), and each team had 12 steals on the evening.

Sophomore Kendra Pitts and junior Cortensia Davis each had six points for the Eagles.

Post will try to bounce back, as it opens the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 20 against NYIT at the Drubner Center. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m., and will be followed by the men's basketball game against C.W. Post.

Game Notes: Six players made their debuts with the Eagles this evening, as Kendra Pitts, Jamie Martingano, Cortensia Davis, Mallorie Michalk, Cynthia Middleton, and Elizabeth Johnson donned the Green and White for the first time ... It was also the first game for Head Coach Tracey Garofalo, who graduated in 2002, and is still the all-time leading scorer in school-history.
