Caldwell Beats Women's Basketball, 89-72

WATERBURY, Conn.-Junior Stephanie Goss (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) recorded her fifth double-double of the season and third in as many games for the Post University women's basketball team, Tuesday evening, in an 89-72 loss to Caldwell College at the Drubner Center.

Goss, who was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Honorable Mention, led three Eagles (4-16, 4-9 CACC) in double figures, as she connected 6-of-8 from the field, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Junior Kendra Pitts (Detroit, Mich./Indiana Tech) chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Freshman Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, Conn./Platt), who was named CACC Rookie of the Week, added 10 points and four assists.

Post shot 45.9 percent from the field in the contest, knocking down 28-of-61 shot attempts. But, the Eagles struggled from three-point range connecting just 20 percent (3-15) from distance. At the charity stripe, the Eagles were 13-of-16 for the game, for an 81.3 percentage.

Caldwell (13-7, 7-5 CACC) forced the Eagles into 25 turnovers, and scored 23 points off of the Eagle miscues. The Cougars controlled the inside as they out rebounded the Eagles 42-38, scored 46 points in the paint, and held a 24-10 margin in second chance points.

Caldwell had five scorers in double figures led by Kirsty Leedham who had a game-high 20 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Mackenzie Lynch and Khaliqa Davis each had 14 points, while Janay Perkins had 12 points and Melissa Freeman chipped in with 11.

After a Pitts bucket gave the Eagles a 14-10 lead with 11:40 left in the first half, the Cougars mounted a 10-0 run, capped by a Leeham jumper to take a 20-14 lead with 8:39 left in the first half.

Post would cut the lead to three points twice, but a Leedham trey at the 7:08 mark, ignited a 14-7 run, to lead 36-26 with 3:30 left until halftime. Each team traded baskets the next six trips down the floor, freshman Elizabeth Johnson's jumper cut the lead to 40-34 with 1:34 left in the half.

But a free throw by Davis, a basket by Dana Leary, and a half court three-pointer with time expiring at halftime, by Abena George gave the Cougars a 46-36 halftime lead.  

Caldwell opened the second half with a 10-4 run, after a field goal by Leedham at the 16:40 mark, to take a 56-40 lead. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they would get no closer than 12 points on three different occasions in the second half.

Johnson had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting for the Eagles. She also had four rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes.

Post returns to the hardwood, as it continues its home stand on Saturday afternoon against Dominican College. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
