Goss' Double-Double, Leads Women's Basketball Past Nyack, 80-65

WATERBURY, Conn.-Junior Stephanie Goss (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) recorded her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season, with a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds, in an 80-65 win over Nyack College, Thursday evening at the Drubner Center.

Post improved to 4-15 overall and 4-8 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while Nyack fell to 6-12 and 3-7 in league play.

Goss had a solid night shooting the basketball connecting on 12-of-19 from the field, for a 63.1 percent clip. Four of her 12 caroms, were on the offensive glass, and she also had four assists, in 35 minutes of action.

The Manchester, Conn. Native led three Eagles in double figures on the night, as freshman Mallorie Michalak (Meriden, Conn./Platt) chipped in with 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting. She was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, and tied a season-high with seven assists. Michalak had seven assists on January 12 at Georgian Court.

Senior Jennifer Rose (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) rounded out the trio with 11 points, including three treys on the evening.

The 80 points was the largest offensive effort for the Eagles this season, as the team connected on 48.4 percent from the field, knocking down 31-of-64 shots.

Post had trouble finding its mark from three-point range, as it connected on only 33.3 percent, netting 8-of-24 from downtown. However, it held Nyack to virtually the same percentage, 8-of-24, for a 36.4 percent evening.

The Eagles were close to automatic from the free throw line, knocking down 10-of-11 on the night.

Post also controlled the glass with a 37-36 margin, but Nyack held a 13-11 edge in offensive rebounds. However, the Eagles outscored the Warriors 36-18 in the paint, and 14-8 in second chance opportunities. Post scored 12 points off 10 Nyack turnovers, and held a 16-9 edge in fast-break points.

Nyack was led by three scorers in double figures, as Tamyra Lathon had 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Kelsy McIntosh added 14 points on 5-of-13 from the field and Kaarina Stearns netted 10 points on 5-of-8 from the floor. Shelly Yount led Nyack with 10 rebounds.

The Warriors shot 22-of-60 from the field for a 36.7 percent shooting night. At the free throw line, they connected 13-of-17 for a 76.5 percentage.

Nyack took a 7-4 lead early in the contest, after a McIntosh fast-break lay-up, but a Michalak jumper sparked a 21-0 run, giving the Eagles a 22-7 lead with 10:11 left until halftime. Senior LaToya Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.) had six points in that run, while Goss and Michalak each added five.

Post would stretch the lead to 33-14 with 5:25 left in the opening 20 minutes, with a trey by Rose, but Nyack would go on a 13-4 run ignited by a three-pointer from McIntosh, cutting the lead to 37-26 with 1:01 left in the half.

The Eagles would go into the locker room at halftime with a 39-26 lead, after a freshman Elizabeth Johnson (Manchester, Conn./N.F.A) jumper with 23 ticks left on the clock.

In the second half, Nyack would get no closer than eight points as the Eagles were able to keep in control. Goss had 16 of her game-high offensive effort in the second half. She was 8-of-11 from the field, as the Eagles converted 15-of-31 shots from the field in the second half.

This evening's game, begins a five-game home stand for the Eagles, as they will continue the stretch of games at home on Tuesday, Feb. 5 against Caldwell College. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
