Women's Basketball Falls To Philadelphia

WATERBURY, Conn.-Ashley Webster had a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, to lead visiting Philadelphia University past the Post University women's basketball team, 72-49, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game at the Drubner Center, Saturday afternoon.

Junior Stephanie Goss (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) led the Eagles (3-14, 3-7 CACC) with nine points, six rebounds, and four steals in 21 minutes of action.

Junior Cortensia Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Kingsborough C.C.) chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds. Davis grabbed five offensive rebounds, and had a block in 13 minutes off the bench for the Eagles.

Freshman Elizabeth Johnson (Manchester, Conn./N.F.A.) added seven points of 3-of-5 shooting on the day.

The Eagles struggled shooting, connecting on only 29.2 percent from the field, knocking down 19-of-65 shot attempts. Post also had trouble finding its range from three-point range, connecting on only 25 percent from distance, hitting on 4-of-16. The Eagles only got to the free throw line seven times, but they made the most of their opportunities connecting on each of their seven shots.

Webster led three Rams in double figures, as Jessica Romano chipped in with 21 points, while Amanda Brennan added 18 points. Webster and Romano were a combined 20-for-22 from the free throw line, as Philadelphia was 20-of-23 from the charity stripe on the evening.

Philadelphia controlled the boards, owning a 44-32 rebounding advantage, but each team grabbed 15 offensive caroms. Philadelphia out scored the Eagles 30-26 in the paint, and had an 18-11 advantage in second chance points.

The Rams scored 18 points off 18 Eagle turnovers, while Post scored 10 points off 16 Philadelphia turnovers.

In the first half, the Eagles took a 5-4 lead with a three-pointer by senior LaToya Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.). Philadelphia took the lead back with a lay-in by Webster, but senior Jackie Sutton's (Dryden, N.Y./Tompkins-Cortland C.C.) jumper gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead.

After a pair of Romano free throws, Coley canned another trey, giving the Eagles a 10-8 lead with 16:19 left in the half. However, it would be the last lead of the afternoon for Post, as Philadelphia went on a 14-0 run, holding the Eagles without a field goal until the 6:57 mark with after a lay-up by Goss, to take a 22-12 lead.

The Rams extended the lead to as much as 15 points with a lay-up by Romano at the 3:50 mark, but a lay-up by Johnson, and a lay-up and a pair of free throws by junior Kendra Pitts (Detroit, Mich./Indiana Tech) gave the Eagles a 6-0 run to end the first half, and trailed by nine, 31-22 at the break.

In the second stanza, the Eagles were able to cut the lead to four points, after a Johnson three made it 33-29 Philadelphia at the 17:35 mark. But, a 13-0 run by Philadelphia extended the lead to 44-29 with 15:02 to play.

The Eagles return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Jan. 29, as they travel to Bloomfield College. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
