Softball Sweeps Philadelphia University On Senior Day

April 26, 2008

WATERBURY, Conn.-Freshman Tierney Marceau (Norton, Mass./Norton) homered and senior Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) had the game-winning hit in the first game and went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, as the Post University softball team swept Philadelphia University 5-4 and 4-3 Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field on Senior Day.

The Eagles improve to 22-26 overall and 10-14 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while Philadelphia University falls to 14-28 overall and 10-14 in CACC play.

In the first game, Marceau gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead, by blasting her fifth homerun of the season over the wall in left field.

The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Lagares laced an RBI-single to right, to plate sophomore Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads), who pounded her ninth double of the season. Lagares stole second, and came home, when senior Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) roped a double to the gap in left centerfield.

However, the Rams scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead. But in the home half of the seventh, with two outs and a runner on second base, Lagares corked a triple to the wall in left centerfield, allowing sophomore Nicole Gizzi (Waterbury, Conn./Kennedy) to knot the game at 3-3. Lagares scored the winning-run on a wild pitch.

Lagares went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in for the Eagles in the first game. Marceau went 2-for-3 with a homerun. McAveney went 1-for-3 with her eighth double of the season.

McAveney also picked up her 12th win of the season, as she gave up four runs, two earned on eight hits and one walk, while striking out three, in her final pitching performance as a senior.

The Eagles scored the first two runs in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap, as senior Allison Williams (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) laced her 12th double of the season to centerfield plating Lagares, who reached on a bunt single. Williams scored when sophomore Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) reached on an error.

Lagares scored the third run of the game for the Eagles in the bottom of the second inning, as she stole second and scored on a fielding error by the Philadelphia shortstop.

Philadelphia tied it after scoring a run in the top of the second and two more in the top of the sixth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice-fly from Gizzi to score Canning, who reached on an error.

Lagares scored two runs and had a pair of stolen bases to make her a perfect 15-of-15 on the season. Williams went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Canning went 1-for-3 with a run scored and her 10th double of the year.

Carrillo scattered three runs on eight hits and two walks to get her 10th win of the season for the Eagles in the nightcap.

Following the games, the Eagles recognized five seniors playing in their final home games on Saturday. Lagares, McAveney, Williams, Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck), and Desere Obregon (Bogata, N.J./Bogata) were recognized for their years of service to the Post University softball program.
