SoftballMarceau's Walk-off Single Gives Softball Split Of Dominican April 21, 2008 WATERBURY, Conn.-Freshman Tierney Marceau (Norton, Mass./Norton) stroked a single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie, and give the Post University softball team a 2-1 win, in the first game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at LaMoy Field on Monday afternoon. Dominican won the nightcap 11-0 in five innings. Dominican (22-20, 13-5 CACC) scored the first run in the first game off a homerun by Cara Piasecki in the top of the fourth inning to straight-ahead centerfield. The lead would hold up until the bottom of the sixth inning, when sophomore Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) blasted her third homerun of the season for the Eagles (20-24, 8-12 CACC), and fifth of her career, that went over the wall in centerfield. Dominican threatened in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, but senior pitcher Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) got a fly-ball out to end the rally. In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angles, Calif./New Roads) led-off with a single up the middle, then senior Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) drew a walk. The runners were moved up on a sacrifice bunt by senior Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt), and McAveney was intentionally walked to load the bases. That brought Marceau to the plate and she ripped the first pitch that she saw through the left side of the Dominican infield to plate Carrillo and give the Eagles the 2-1 win. Canning went 2-for-3 with her ninth double of the season, to go along with the homerun. Stotz went 2-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice-hit. Carrillo went 2-for-3 with a run scored. McAveney gave up one run on six hits and two walks, while striking out six batters. McAveney earned her 11th win of the season, retiring nine of the first 11 batters she faced. She also got eight batters to ground out. In the nightcap, Dominican did most of its damage in the top of the first inning, scoring six runs on five hits and one error, capped by a grand slam from Danielle Garrison, to take a 6-0 lead, before the Eagles came to bat. The Chargers would add two more in the top of the second, and three more in the top of the fifth, as the game was called after five innings. Canning led the Eagles in the nightcap, as she went 2-for-2. Post travels to Caldwell College on April 24 for a CACC
twinbill. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
