Williams Homers, As Softball Sweeps Chestnut Hill

April 19, 2008

WATERBURY, Conn.-Senior Allison Williams (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) blasted her first homerun of the season in the second game, as the Post University softball team swept Chestnut Hill College in a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games on a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

The Eagles improve to 19-21 overall and 7-11 in CACC play, while Chestnut Hill, who is in its first season as a conference member, falls to 9-30 overall and 4-15 in the CACC.

Sophomore Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) put the Eagles on the board first in the bottom of the second inning of the first game. Carrillo laced a double that scored sophomore Emily Archer (Norton, Mass./Norton) from first and sophomore Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) from second.

Post added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Tierney Marceau (Norton, Mass./Norton) had an RBI-single that plated senior Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt). Then Archer reached on an error, which allowed Williams and Canning to come around and score.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Carrillo tripled, to bring home sophomore Nicole Gizzi (Waterbury, Conn./Kennedy). Then senior Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) grounded out to plate Carrillo.

Carrillo was 2-for-3 with her seventh double of the season and fourth triple of the year. She also knocked in three runners and crossed the plate once. Lagares was 3-for-4 with her 11th stolen base of the season to that point. Canning was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Senior Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) picked up her 10th win of the season, giving up no runs on six hits and two walks. McAveney (10-10) struck out four batters.

Chestnut Hill scored two runs in their first at-bat of the nightcap, but the Eagles scored one in the bottom of the first as Lagares scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the third with Marceau aboard after reaching on an error, Williams smacked a two-run shot, to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

McAveney scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Canning tripled to score Carrillo, then Williams doubled to knock in Canning, and McAveney singled in Williams to close out the scoring for the Eagles.

Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, in the nightcap for the Eagles. McAveney was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Archer and Gizzi each went 2-for-3 as well.

Carrillo yielded two unearned runs on four hits and two walks to pick up her ninth win of the season for the Eagles.

Post returns to the diamond on Sunday, as they travel to Dowling College for a non-conference twinbill. The Eagles return to LaMoy Field on Monday afternoon with a CACC doubleheader against Dominican College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
