Softball Falls At Home To Georgian Court, Sunday Afternoon

WATERBURY, Conn.-The number-25th ranked Georgian Court University, rallied from a 2-1 deficit, to the Post University softball team in the nightcap of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, to defeat, the Eagles 6-2, after taking the first game 5-0, Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

In the second game, Georgian Court jumped out to a 1-0 lead, with a run in the top of the third inning, but the Eagles (9-11, 0-6 CACC) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, when sophomore third base Emily Archer (Norton, Mass./Norton) laced a single to center, to drive in senior second base Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt), who reached on a bunt single, then stole second, and went to third on the play, as the ball sailed into the outfield.

Post took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, as senior first base Allison Williams (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) roped a double to the wall in right field, then went to third on a bunt base hit from sophomore left fielder Sarah Beyers (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), putting runners on the corners. Senior centerfielder Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) singled to left to knock in Williams.

The lead would hold until the top of the seventh inning, when the Lions sent 10 batters to the plate, and scored five runs on six hits and one Eagle error.

Lagares led the Eagles at the plate, as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and her sixth stolen base of the season. Stotz, Archer, sophomore shortstop Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook), senior pitcher Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley), Williams and Beyers all had hits for the Eagles.

McAveney was tagged with the loss, but pitched well, keeping the potent Lion offense in check. She has eight strikeouts, and at one point retired 10-of-11 batters she faced.

Samantha Sasko picked up two wins for Georgian Court, as she started both ends of the doubleheader this afternoon. In the first game, she gave up just five hits and one walk, while striking out 11, and in the nightcap she was touched for two runs on eight hits and struck out five.

In the first game, the Lions scored two runs in the first, and one in the second, third and sixth innings.

McAveney and freshman catcher Tierney Marceau (Norton, Mass./Norton) each went 2-for-3 for the Eagles at the plate in the first game.

Post returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, as it hosts Nyack College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at LaMoy Field.
