Softball Splits With AIC

March 26, 2008

WATERBURY, Conn.-Sophomore shortstop Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y/Lynbrook) smacked her second homerun of the season in the first game, and sophomore pitcher Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) went 2-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap, as the Post University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with American International College, Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

AIC (8-4) won the first game 4-3, thanks to three runs in the top of the fourth inning, while the Eagles (9-9) took the nightcap with four runs in the fourth.

Canning helped the Eagles to three runs in the bottom of the first inning, in game one with a three-run shot, with Carrillo and sophomore third base Emily Archer (Norton, Mass./Norton) aboard.

But, AIC scored three times in the fourth off an error, to tie the game at three. The Yellowjackets took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, with a double to centerfield from Tara DeMontier that knocked in Kayla Donnelly.

Senior centerfielder Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) went 2-for-4, while Canning went 1-for-3 with the three-run homer. Archer went 1-for-3 as well.

Carrillo yielded four runs on seven hits and two walks, while getting tagged with the loss. She struck out three batters in seven innings.

After AIC scored the first run in the first inning of the nightcap, the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning with the second triple of the season from Carrillo, which drove home senior second base Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) and Stotz. Archer singled to plate Carrillo, and senior pitcher Caitlin McAveney (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) laced a run-scoring single to score Archer.

The Eagles added two more runs in the fourth inning, off the bat from Carrillo, who doubled to bring home Lagares and Stotz.

AIC added one more run in the top of the fifth inning.

McAveney was touched for two runs, one earned on seven hits and two walks, to record her fifth win of the season. She had one strikeout, which upped her team-high total to 43. She also helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run batted in.

Stotz and Lagares each scored two runs in the second game.

The Eagles return to the diamond on Friday afternoon, as they travel to Mercy College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. Post returns home for a pair of doubleheaders against Georgian Court on Saturday, and Assumption College on Sunday afternoon.
