Softball Wins In Extra Innings For the Second Saturday In A Row

LAKEWOOD, N.J.-The Post University softball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning, to defeated Georgian Court University, 11-8 in extra innings, in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twinbill Saturday afternoon at Georgian Court University.

With the win the Eagles have won four out of their last six games to improve to 7-13 overall and 4-4 in CACC play. GCU falls to 14-16 on the season, and drop its first CACC game of the year, falling to 8-1 in CACC play.

Junior Desere Obregon laced a two-run double to the gap in right center field to highlight a five-run inning for the Eagles in the ninth inning of the nightcap.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs on four hits and an error by the GCU defense. Freshman Samantha Canning singled to left field to drive in junior Amanda Misa who had a leadoff single. Post added its second run, when Obregon reached on an error, allowing senior Megan Pappas to cross the plate.

Post made it 3-0 in the top of the third inning, as Pappas corked her 17th career homerun, and team-leading third of the season.

GCU tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

However, the Eagles clawed their way back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Sara Byers reached on an error by the right fielder which allowed Misa and sophomore Michelle Stotz to score. One batter later, Canning ripped a single to right field to knock in Byers.

GCU tied it again in the home half of the seventh inning with single by Mallory Kirchner and a sacrifice-fly from Nicole Fortino.

The score remained knotted at 6-6 until the top of the ninth, when the Eagles crossed the plate five times on four hits and an error. With Stotz placed on second for the international tiebreaker, freshman Stephanie Carrillo singled to left to put runners on the corners for Byers, who reached on an error giving the Eagles a 7-6 lead. Obregon's double added two more runs for the Eagles, and freshman Emily Archer blasted her first collegiate homerun to give Post an 11-6 lead.

GCU added two runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 11-8.

Misa was 3-for-5 for the Eagles at the plate with two runs scored. Five players had multi-hit games. The Eagles pounded out 16 hits in the second game of the day. Pappas went 2-for-4, Canning was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Obregon was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in, and senior Shannon Firetto was 2-for-4.

Carrillo picked up the win in relief, as she gave up four runs on six hits and one walk in three innings. She did strikeout four hitters.

In the first game, Georgian Court scored three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the third inning, before the Eagles crossed the plate four times in the top of the sixth inning.

Junior Allie Williams led the inning off with a walk, and would come around to score on a walk by junior Vanessa Lagres. Senior Jackie Davis ripped a two-out triple to left to bring in Lagares, Obregon, and Pappas.

Post has scored 42 runs in its last six games, giving the Eagles 80 on the season.

The Eagles return to LaMoy Field on Monday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against Mercy College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. On Tuesday, the Eagles will host Felician College in a CACC twinbill.
