SoftballSoftball Upended By Caldwell April 24, 2007 WATERBURY, Conn.-Caldwell scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning, to take a 3-1 decision from the Post University softball team, in the first game of a Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) twinbill at LaMoy Field. Caldwell also took the nightcap, 7-1. Caldwell (26-12, 16-4 CACC), the number-16 ranked team in NCAA Division II, scored the first run, of the first game of the afternoon, in the top of the first inning. Jackie Velardi grounded out, which plated Danielle Genovese, who reached on an error by the Post (13-21, 9-9 CACC) shortstop. The Eagles knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, as freshman Samantha Canning was hit by a pitch. Freshman Emily Archer then came in to pinch run for Canning. Senior Shannon Firetto singled, to put runners on first and second. Junior Amanda Misa laced a double to the wall in centerfield to drive in Archer, and tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles had a crack at the game-winning run in the sixth inning with runners on first and second, and in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner on second, but could not find a way to knock them in. Caldwell took advantage of an error in the top of the eighth inning, to push two runs across the plate. Stacy Falkowski, bloop single to left centerfield, proved to be the game-winning runs. Firetto led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3. Priscilla Encarnacao went 2-for-4 as well. Junior Caitlin McAveney took the loss, as she gave up three runs, all unearned on four hits and two walks. She also struck out two batters. Her counterpart, Nicole Webb gave up one run on seven hits and struck out 12 to get the win. In the nightcap, Caldwell jumped out early on the Eagles scoring two runs in the top of the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. Post got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second, as Canning lofted a sacrifice fly to plate junior Desere Obregon who led the inning off with a double to the wall in centerfield. Caldwell would add single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to close out the scoring. Obregon was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run batted in. Junior Amanda Misa and freshman Karalee Desrosiers each had hits in the nightcap for the Eagles. Post travels to Wilmington College on Wednesday afternoon, for a
CACC twinbill. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
