Softball Sweeps Goldey-Beacom

April 21, 2007

WATERBURY, Conn.-Junior Caitlin McAveney picked up her fifth win of the season, and knocked in three runners, as the Post University softball team swept Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, on a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

With the sweep, the Eagles improve to 12-18 overall and 9-7 in the CACC, as the Eagles looks to earn a spot in the CACC Championships. Goldey-Beacom falls to 3-27 overall and 0-16 in the CACC.

Post has won three of its last four games, and has scored 30 runs in that span to raise its season total to 138.

In the first game, Goldey-Beacom scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles answered with four of their own, in their first at bat. McAveney ripped a one-out single to plate junior Amanda Misa. Senior Priscilla Encarnacao knocked in senior Megan Pappas with a base hit to knot the game at 2-2. Then freshman Samantha Canning laced a two run single, that brought home junior Desere Obregon and McAveney.

After GBC pushed a run across in the top of the second, to cut the lead to 4-3, Pappas ripped a RBI-base hit to score sophomore Michelle Stotz, who had a leadoff single.

The score would remain, 5-3, until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Eagles would explode for four runs. McAveney had a run scoring single to plate Misa, and then the Eagles were able to load the bases for Canning who was hit by a pitch. Then freshman Karalee Desrosiers laced a two-run single to bring home Encarnacao and Obregon.

In the fifth inning, Pappas reached on a fielding error, which allowed Stotz to score. Pappas was lifted for junior Vanessa Lagares as a pinch runner. That brought McAveney to the plate and she laced a double to plate Lagares and give the Eagles an 11-3 win, via the eight-run mercy rule.

McAveney was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, Stotz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Pappas was 2-for-4 with a run scored and one run batted in.

McAveney gave up three runs on six hits in five innings of work, to earn the victory. She also had two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Goldey-Beacom scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles scored four times in the home half of the first inning, to take a 4-1 lead. However, GBC score three times in the top of the third inning, and once more in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

But, McAveney would stay hot, lacing a one-out double to put the tying run in scoring position. She was lifted for senior Shannon Firetto as a pinch runner. After Obregon walked, Canning singled to clear the bases to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead.

Freshman Stephanie Carrillo pitched two innings of shutout ball to earn her second collegiate save. Pappas picked up the win, recording three strikeouts.

Misa led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and one run batted in.

Post returns to action on Sunday afternoon, with a non-conference doubleheader at Assumption College.
