Encarnacao's Pinch-Hit Single, Gives Softball 5-4 Win In 10 Innings

WATERBURY, Conn.-Senior Priscilla Encarnacao ripped a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 10th inning, gave the Post University softball team a 5-4 win in 10 innings over Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Holy Family came back to win the nightcap, 7-6 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Post is now 9-15 overall and 6-6 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while Holy Family is 12-14 overall and 6-6 in the CACC.

In the first game, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as junior Desere Obregon single plated junior Allison Williams who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the third inning, as senior Megan Pappas singled to knock in sophomore Michelle Stotz who laced a one-out double.

Holy Family crossed the plate three times in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. But the Eagles would knot the score at 3-3, when Pappas corked her fourth homerun of the season and 18th for her career.

It would remain tied at 3-3 until the top of the ninth inning, when Holy Family pushed a run across. The Eagles would tie it in the bottom of the ninth, as freshman Karalee Desrosiers, who was placed on second for the international tiebreaker, came home when freshman Amanda Prince reached on an error.

Pappas came on to pitch a perfect 10th inning, and Encarnacao became the heroine with a base hit with the bases loaded to plate junior Vanessa Lagares.

Pappas was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and a run scored, for the Eagles in the first game.

In the nightcap, the Eagles came like gangbusters, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Pappas singled and went to third on an error by the Holy Family left fielder to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Stotz, junior Amanda Misa, and Lagares all came around to score on the play. Obregon brought Pappas home with a base hit of her own, to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead at one inning.

Post added another run in the bottom of the second inning, as a Lagares single drove in Stotz who singled.

After scoring one run in the top of the second, the Tigers put two more in the top of the third to cut the Post lead to 5-3. Post made it 6-3 with a RBI-double from Obregon, plating Lagares.

But, the Tigers scored four runs on three hits and an error in the top of the seventh inning to come away with the 7-6 win. Dolores Brown helped her own cause with a two-run double to score the game's winning runs.

Lagares led three Eagles with multi-hit games in the nightcap. She also scored twice and knocked in one runner. Stotz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Misa was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Obregon was 2-for-3 with her third double of the season and two runs batted in.
