Softball Drops CACC Opener At Bloomfield

March 27, 2007

BLOOMFIELD, N.J.-Sophomore Michelle Stotz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the first game, and the Eagles pounded out 10 hits in the nightcap, as the Post University softball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to Bloomfield College, Tuesday afternoon at Clarks Pond.

Stotz finished the afternoon 4-for-7 with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Eagles (2-8, 0-2 CACC) who fell in the opener 5-3, and led 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, before a two-out walk off homerun gave Bloomfield (7-7, 2-2 CACC) a 3-2 win.

Bloomfield scored the first runs of the opening game in the bottom of the first inning as Erin Covell ripped a double to left center to plate two runners. The Deacons would add another run in the bottom of the third and two more in the home half of the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

But, the Eagles would not go quiet in the top of the seventh, as they scored three runs on four hits to get it to 5-3. Freshman Karalee Desrosiers, in her first collegiate at-bat ripped a single to right field, which allowed sophomore pinch runner Christine DeJesus to come around to score.

That brought Stotz to the plate, and she singled up the middle and went to second, when Desrosiers crossed the plate. Junior Amanda Misa kept the hit parade going as she laced a double down the left field line, to knock in Stotz.

Stotz added a triple in the fifth inning, as she was the only Eagle to have a multi-hit game in the opener.

Junior Caitlin McAveney was tagged with the loss, as she gave up three runs, two earned on five hits and two walks in four innings of work. McAveney (1-2) struck out two batters. Freshman Stephanie Carrillo pitched two innings of relief giving up two runs on three hits and no walks. Carrillo had two strikeouts in the first game.

In the nightcap, Bloomfield scratched a run across in with three hits in the bottom of the second inning. But, Post quickly tied it in the top of the third inning, as senior Shannon Firetto singled to center, then stole second, and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Misa. Stotz brought her home after singling up the middle.

It would remain that way until the seventh inning, when Desrosiers reached on a fielding error by the right fielder, allowing Misa to score from second base, after leading the inning off with a single up the middle.

However, with two outs and the count at 3-2, Brianne Moore drove a pitch over the fence in centerfield for the walk-off homerun.

Misa was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the second game, as three players had a pair of hits for the Eagles. Stotz went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, and Desrosiers was 2-for-4.

Senior Megan Pappas was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings of work. Pappas (1-3) allowed only one walk, while striking out three batters.

Post travels to Nyack College on Wednesday afternoon for an important CACC twin bill. First pitch for the opening game is slated for 2:30 p.m.
