New Haven Edges Men's Soccer, 1-0

WATERBURY, Conn.-New Haven scored in the 85th minute to break a scoreless tie, to defeat the Post University men's soccer team, in a rainy non-conference match at LaMoy Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Chargers improve to 1-4 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-5.

Jessey Fernandez ripped a shot from just inside the top left hand corner of the 18-yard box, putting it past Post goalkeeper Marco Gaspar, for the game-winning goal.

Sophomore Eurica Trowers and sophomore Johan Pineda led the Eagles with four shots apiece; the duo also had two shots on goal in the contest. Junior Luis Figueiredo had three shots for Post.

The Eagles outshot the Chargers 19-13, including a 14-6 edge in the first half, as rain fell throughout the first half. Each team took six corner kicks, with both teams trading 4-2 edges in each half, beginning with the Eagles to start the contest.

UNH keeper James Hilaire kept the Eagles off the board, recording nine saves, including six in the first half to earn the win. Gaspar was also steady in net as he made six saves for the Eagles.

Post returns to action this weekend, as it travels to the Merrimack College Tournament. The Eagles will first meet Stonehill College on Saturday at 12 p.m., and tangle with the host on Sunday with kickoff slated for 2 p.m.
