Men's Soccer Opens Season With 1-0, Loss To SCSU

August 24, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn.-The Post University men's soccer team opened the 2007 campaign on Friday evening, taking on the number-six ranked team in NCAA Division II Southern Connecticut State University, in the first round of the SCSU Autumn Classic. The host Owls defeated the Eagles 1-0.

Southern scored the only goal of the contest in the 36th minute. Ancil Farrier feed Jackson from the left side of the box, and Jackson placed a shot into the net that went by the hands of Eagle goalkeeper junior Dan Nadel.

Before SCSU scored the first goal of the game, the Eagles had a chance to find the back of the net, as senior Alex Brito went one-on-one with SCSU keeper Joe Pilla. Pilla, however, was able to get a hold of the ball and keep it a scoreless tie to that point.

Both teams had several quality scoring opportunities to score in the second half, but neither team could capitalize on those chances.

Brito led the Eagles, with four shots in the contest, while sophomore Johan Pineda chipped in with three. Seniors Raleigh Woodburn and Pat Meyer each had a shot in the contest for the Eagles.

SCSU out shot the Eagles 16-9 in the contest, but Post held a 6-5 edge in the second half. Southern enjoyed a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Post returns to action on Sunday, as it faces the number-nine ranked team in Division II, Franklin Pierce University, in the second-round of the SCSU Classic. Kickoff for Sunday's match is slated for 11 a.m. Franklin Pierce was upended by the University of Bridgeport in the first match of the afternoon 2-1.
