Assumption Clips Men's Basketball, 64-62

SMITHFIELD, R.I.-With the score tied at 62-62, Assumption's Pat Shea missed a three-pointer, but Corey Diethorn grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled He went to the free throw line, and calmly made two free throws to give the Greyhounds a 64-62 win over the Post University men's basketball team in the second-round of the Bryant Holiday Classic at the Chace Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles (5-6) were led by junior forward AJ Reitter (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) who had 18 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the field. He also converted 4-of-9 from three-point range, while grabbing five rebounds, blocking two shots, and recording three steals.

Senior forward Peter Lawal (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) was the only other Eagle in double figures, as he had 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

The Greyhounds (10-3) were led by Diethorn who had a double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds. Greg Twomey led all scorers with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Shea chipped in with 12.

Assumption led in the first half taking a 20-15 lead with a jumper by Diethorn at the 5:14 mark of the opening 20 minutes. But, a three-pointer from junior forward Omar Robinson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Carnarsie) ignited an 8-0 run, which gave the Eagles a 23-20 lead, with 4:48 left until halftime.

Post kept the lead, extending it to as much as six points, 33-27, after a three-pointer from freshman guard Garvin McAlister (Norwich, Conn./N.F.A), with 26 seconds left until halftime. Assumption got a jumper from Diethorn heading into the break trailing 33-29.

The Eagles shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the field, including 46.2 percent (12-26) in the second half. Post shot 40 percent (8-20) from three-point range. The Eagles limited the Greyhounds to 33.3 percent (20-60) from the field, and 0-of-14 from three-point range.

Assumption held a 44-40 edge on the glass, including a 13-11 margin on the offensive boards. Despite controlling the offensive boards, the Eagles did score nine second chance points, but Assumption took advantage of 20 turnovers by the Eagles, converting them into 25 points. The Greyhounds sank 82.8 percent (24-29) of their charity stripe chances, including 17-of-20 (85%) in the second half.

Post returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 5, as it travels to Goldey-Beacom, for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) clash. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
