Men's Basketball Nipped At Caldwell, 66-55

CALDWELL, N.J.-Senior swingman Arthur Robertson (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Beach Channel) led all Post University men's basketball players with 14 points, but Caldwell College came away with a 66-55 decision, Wednesday evening at the George R. Newman Center.

The Eagles fall to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), while Caldwell improves to 6-12 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Robertson led three Eagles in double figures as freshman guard Garvin McAlister (Norwich, Conn./N.F.A.) and junior guard James Lee (Montreal, Quebec, Canada/Vanier Prep) each chipped in with 10 points apiece.

McAlister, recorded double-digits for just the second time in his career, as he had 15 points on December 28 against Bryant, he shot 4-of-7 on the night, while Lee was 4-of-9 from the field.

Caldwell shot 51.1 percent from the field, connecting on 24-of-47 of its field goal attempts. The Cougars held the Eagles to 35.5 percent (22-62) shooting. Post was also held to 22.7 percent (5-22) from three-point range, while Caldwell shot 40 percent (6-15) from behind the arch.

The Cougars also controlled the boards, owning a 43-26 advantage. Each team controlled seven offensive caroms. Caldwell also held a 30-20 advantage in the paint, and a 10-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Post forced Caldwell into 18 turnovers, while limiting its miscues to only nine.

It was a tight first half, as there was five ties and 10 lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Caldwell's Dante Rollins hit two free throws, and then a bucket by Adam Sabree put the Cougars up 30-26 with about a minute left until the break.

But, senior forward Peter Lawal (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) converted an ole fashion three-point play, as the teams went into the locker room with Caldwell leading, 30-29.

The second half was just as close, as there was four ties in the first seven minutes of the second stanza. Post took a 40-38 lead at the 13:46 mark, after a lay-up from junior center Jesse Iyalekhue (Bronx, N.Y./Columbus).

Caldwell, tied it with a basket by B.J Suchy, as the Cougars scored the next seven points to take a 45-40 lead. With 10:33 left. The run was cut by Lee who nailed a trey at the 9:56 mark. The Cougars scored seven of the next nine points to take a 52-45 lead with 5:18 left.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon as Philadelphia University pays a visit to the Drubner Center, the game is set for a 3 p.m. tip.

The game will be carried live on the Eagles Sports Network, as Joe Coss (play-by-play) and Dave Warren (color analyst) will call the action. The Nike Pre-Game show begins following the Post-Philadelphia women's game at 1 p.m.
