Men's Golf Eight Strokes Off Lead At Dowling September Shootout

September 16, 2007

RIVERHEAD, N.Y.-Freshman Ryan Philipp carded a three-over par 74 to lead the Post University men's golf team in the first round of the Dowling College September Shootout at the prestigious Long Island National Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.

"We struck the ball well today and gave ourselves good scoring opportunities, but some of our putts wouldn't fall," Head Coach Pete Stevens said following the round. "We are in a good position for tomorrow's final round, with just eight strokes behind the leader."

Pace University and Assumption are the co-leaders after the first round, with team scores of 303. UMass.-Lowell and Adelphi are tied for third with a pair of 304's. St. Thomas Aquinas followed with a 309 and the Eagles recorded a 311.

Junior Jamie Blake is second on the team, after carding a six-over par 77, and sophomore Lee Wanklyn is third on the team with a 79.

Sophomore James Livingstone and senior Calum Malcolm rounded out the Eagles with round of 81.

"We are close to achieving our tempo as a team," Stevens added. "The team is very skillful and we should do well tomorrow."

The tournament will conclude on Monday morning.
