GolfMen's Golf Opens Season At Goldey-Beacom Invitational September 7, 2007 WATERBURY, Conn.-The two-time defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Champion, Post University men's golf team, begins its quest for a third, this weekend, at the season opening Goldey-Beacom Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Back Creek/Frog Hollow Golf Club in Middletown, Del. Last season, the Eagles captured two major championships, winning the prestigious ECAC Division II Championships, in the fall and their second consecutive CACC Championship in the spring. Sophomore Lee Wanklyn, who was named the CACC Rookie of the Year, after garnering five Rookie of the Week honors last season returns for the Eagles. He led the team at the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional, finishing 11th overall, at the 7,001-yard Speidel Golf Club's Jones Course in Wheeling, W.Va. At the CACC Championships, at the same Frog Hollow course as the team will be playing on this weekend, Wanklyn finished third overall with a five-over par 76, under blustery conditions. With his top-10 finish, he also received All-CACC kudos. In addition to Wanklyn, the Eagles also return senior Calum Malcolm who was third on the team at last season's CACC Championships. Junior Jamie Blake and sophomore Josh Ralton also finished in the top-5 on the team at last year's CACC Championships. Senior Mike Cavallo, senior Kevin Gemmell, and junior Brian Jones, and sophomore James Livingstone bring depth and experience for the Eagles. In addition to the talented crop of returning players, the Eagles will also look to freshman Ryan Philipp for some solid play. Over the summer, Philipp reached the quarterfinals of the 105th Connecticut Amateur Championships, in the process defeating the number-one seed 1 up to advance to the next round. Head Coach Pete Stevens returns this season, after a 15-month deployment to Iraq with the U.S. Army. Following the Goldey-Beacom Invitational, the Eagles will travel
to the Dowling College Invitational, the weekend of September
16-17, at the prestigious Long Island National Golf Club.
