Golf Heads To Second Tournament Of The Spring

WATERBURY, Conn.-Fresh off finishing sixth overall at the prestigious Barton College Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, March 10-11, the Eagles will head to the 2008 Pace University Spring Invitational at the Crown Park Country Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. March 18-21.

The Barton tournament featured some of the top teams in NCAA Division II and III, as well as individual golfers from Duke, North Carolina, and North Carolina State. Sophomore captain Lee Wanklyn finished tied for 10th overall, carding a one-over par 73 in each of the two rounds of play.

Freshman David McGregor made an impressive collegiate debut, finishing second on the team and tied for 35th overall with a two-round score of 146 (79,73). Senior Calum Malcolm was third on the team with a two-round total of 157 (79-78).

As a team, the Eagles finished sixth overall, in one of the strongest fields the team will face this season. Host Barton won the team competition with a score of 586. Cape Fear CC finished second with a team total of 596, and Mount Olive College rounded out the top three with a score of 607.

Pfeiffer University was fourth with a 608, and was followed by Queens University of Charlotte (610), the Eagles with a team score of 622, Pitt CC (630), Louisburg (671), Lees-McRae College (699), Johnston CC (710), and Chowan University (737).

At the conclusion of the tournament Head Coach Pete Stevens said, "We were using this tournament as a warm-up, and I was very pleased with the way we played. Finishing in the middle of the pack with some of the nation's best golfers is a credit to this program and its players; especially since this was the first time out on a golf course since the fall."

Following the Pace Spring Invitational, the Eagles will take part in the Goldey-Beacom Invitational at the Hartefeld National Golf Course in Avondale, Pa. March 30-April 1.
