Baseball Splits Twinbill With Philadelphia University

May 5, 2008

WATERBURY, Conn.-The Post University baseball team split its final regular season Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to Philadelphia University, winning the first 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and falling by the same 3-2 count, when the Rams pushed across a run in extra innings.

The loss in the nightcap snaps the Eagles 10-game winning streak, the longest in recent memory. The Eagles finished the regular season winning 15 of their last 17 games, and improve to 25-23 overall and 16-11 in the CACC.

Philadelphia clinched the number-one seed in next week's CACC Tournament, with a 21-20 overall record and a 19-8 mark in conference play.

In the first game, junior Ben Schoenberg (Sugarland, Texas/Cedar Creek C.C.) scattered two runs, one earned, on four hits and one walk to record his seventh win of the season. Schoenberg (7-1) had one strike out.

In the bottom of the seventh with runner on first and third, junior Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) tried to check his swing, but the ball dribbled up the third base line in fair territory. It was picked up by the pitcher, and on the attempted throw to first base the ball sailed away, allowing junior Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.) to score the game-winning run.

Philadelphia scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, as Devin Conroy ripped a double to left that plated Zach Mentzerz from first base.

The Eagles knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Huffine lofted a sacrifice-fly to right that plated sophomore Jose Reyes (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt).

The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Eagles responded with a run in the home half of the fifth. Junior Johnny Figueroa (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) smacked a double to left, which scored senior Chris Ouellette (Uncasville, Conn./Montville), who had a leadoff single.

Ouellette went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead seven Eagles with hits in the first game. Huffine went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, and a run batted in.

In the nightcap, Figueroa went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, to raise his season total to eight. He also added his 15th run batted in of the season. He was helped in the first run of the second game in the bottom of the first inning, as he laced a double to left field, which plated senior Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, Conn./Southern Connecticut State Univ.) from first base.

Post added its second run of the nightcap, with a sacrifice-fly from junior Donnie Dlabola (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau C.C.) to plate Conto in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But, the Rams scored tow unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game, and received a two-out base hit from Rob Fisher in the top of the eighth inning to seal the 3-2 victory.

Junior Brendan Wyman (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) held the Rams off the board until the sixth inning, as he retired 12 of the first 13 batters that he faced. He gave up three runs, one earned on five hits and one walk, while striking out seven batters.

At the plate for the Eagles, Ouellette went 2-for-3.
