Baseball Falls To Molloy In ECAC Championships

WATERBURY, Conn.-The record-setting 2008 season for the Post University baseball team came to an end on Friday morning, as Molloy College captured the 2008 ECAC Division II Championship, with a 4-2 win in Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Municipal Stadium. The Lions won Game 1 on Thursday, 9-3.

The Eagles, finished the regular season with a 25-25 overall record, while Molloy improves to 29-21 overall. Post entered the ECAC Championships winners of 10 of its last 11 games, and 15-of-17 dating back to April 19. The 25 wins eclipse the previous school-record of 22 in the 2004 season.

Post also finished with a 16-11 record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), winning 13 of its last 15 games against CACC opponents. Post finished in sixth place, after being picked ninth in the preseason coaches' poll. Under second-year Head Coach AJ McNamara, the Eagles improved upon their overall record for the second year in a row.

Playing in his final game in the Green and White, senior left fielder Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, Conn./Southern Connecticut State Univ.) went 3-for-5 at the plate. Junior first baseman Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) went 3-for-5 with one run scored on a rainy Friday.

Molloy took an early 2-0 lead scoring runs in the top of the second inning and in the top of the fourth. The Lions struck first in the top of the second inning, as Patrick Miles singled to left knocking in Chris Irwin.

The Lions added another run in the top of the fourth inning, as rain started to come down. Irwin doubled to left, and then went to third when Robert LaRusso reached on an error. Irwin came home on a fielder's choice by Ryan Heenan.

The Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning as junior third baseman Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.) stroked an RBI-single to the gap in right centerfield that plated senior Chris Ouellette (Uncasville, Conn./Montville), who also made his final collegiate appearance for the Eagles today.

Molloy tacked on one run in the top of the eighth inning, and the Eagles were able to get it back in the home half of the eighth, when junior second baseman Dan Luisi (Bethpage, N.Y./Holy Trinity) drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate Conto who had an infield single.

However, the Lions added one more run in the top of the ninth, to make it 4-2.

Junior LHP Ben Schoenberg (Sugarland, Texas/Cedar Creek C.C.) was tagged with the loss, after yielding two runs, one earned on seven hits and one walk. Schoenberg (7-2), who tied the school-record for wins in a season, struck out four batters on the day. Sophomore Michael Wolfe (Ringwood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) had four strikeouts in two innings of relief.
