Baseball Pounds Out 10 Runs, In Nightcap Of CACC Doubleheader At Caldwell

April 6, 2008

PARSIPPANY, N.J.-Senior Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, Conn./Southern Conn. State Univ.) extended his personal hitting streak to 10 games, and the Post University baseball team pounded out 11 hits in a 10-3 win in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field. Caldwell won the opener 7-1.

With the win in the nightcap, the Eagles took the season series with the regionally-ranked Cougars, after a 3-0 win on March 25, at Municipal Stadium. Post improves to 9-14 overall and 2-3 in CACC play. Caldwell is 14-10 and 8-3 in the CACC.

After Caldwell scored a run in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap to take a 1-0 lead, the Eagles crossed the plate three times in the top of the second inning. Junior Donnie Dlabola (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau C.C.) stroked a double to left field to plate junior Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity). The next batter, junior Johnny Figueroa (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), hit a single to the gap in right centerfield, which scored Dlabola and junior Joe Proscia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian).

The Cougars added another run in the home half of the fourth, as Omar Velazquez hit a solo homerun to cut the Eagle lead to 3-2.

However, the Eagles would tack on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, to take a 6-2 lead. With the bases loaded, Conto lofted a sacrifice-fly, which would score junior Dan Luisi (Bethpage, N.Y./Holy Trinity), who had a single through the left side of the Caldwell infield. After a Proscia walk to load the bases again, Dlabola laced a double down the left field line, which knocked in Rovinetti and junior Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.).

Raymond Keelan hit the third homer of the nightcap for the Cougars in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo leadoff shot.

The Eagles closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh inning, putting four runs on three hits and a Caldwell error on the board. Rovinetti drew a leadoff walk, and Conto singled to shortstop to put runners on first and second for Proscia. The Brooklyn native reached on an error by the Caldwell pitcher, which allowed Rovinetti to score from second base. Sophomore Jose Reyes (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) smacked a two-run double to left, and would score on an RBI-double from Figueroa.

Dlabola led the Eagles at the plate in the backend of the doubleheader, as he went 2-for-3 with his second and third doubles of the season and three runs batted in. Figueroa went 2-for-4 with his second double of the season, and three runs batted in. Conto was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Rovinetti was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Sophomore Michael Wolfe (Ringwood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) won his third game of the season, while getting touched for two runs on four hits and two walks in four and a third innings. Wolfe (3-1) struck out three batters. Senior Curtis Anthony (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) gave up one run on one hit in an inning of relief, and sophomore Tim McCarthy (Waterbury, Conn./Kennedy) worked a perfect inning and two thirds with four strikeouts.

In the first game, Caldwell scored four runs in the bottom of the first, and three in the second to break the game open.  Jorge Torres hit a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the first.

The lone run of the game for the Eagles came in the top of the seventh, as Figueroa smacked his first career homerun for the Eagles. Reyes went 2-for-3, and senior Chris Ouellette (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) went 2-for-4 for the Eagles. Junior Joe Sanfillippo (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit double.

Post returns to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon, as it travels to Nyack College for a CACC contest. First pitch at Nyack High School is slated for 6 p.m.
