Baseball Wins Fourth In A Row, With 8-4 Win Over Bridgeport

April 22, 2008

WATERBURY, Conn.-The Post University baseball won its fourth game in a row, with an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of Bridgeport, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Eagles trailed 4-3, but scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and three in the bottom of the eighth to take the game.

Post (15-21) improves to 15-21 overall, while Bridgeport falls to 12-14 on the season. The Eagles have won four in a row for the first time since the 2006 season when the Eagles won four games from March 24-28.

The Eagles scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI-groundout from junior Joe Proscia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) that scored junior Johnny Figueroa (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), who reached on an error.

Bridgeport (12-14) scored three runs on one hit and four Post errors in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. But, Post would get two of those runs back in the home half of the fourth, as junior Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.) roped a double to the gap in left center, and later came home on an infield single from senior Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, Conn./Southern Connecticut State Univ.), who began the game at first base, but later moved to left field. Rovinetti then stole second and came home on a junior Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) RBI-single to centerfield.

The Purple Knights took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good. With runners on first and third and nobody out junior Mike Moriarty (Long Beach, N.Y./Nassau C.C.) singled through the left side of the Bridgeport infield to plate Proscia and tie the game at 4-4. The Eagles would score the go-ahead run when junior Dan Luisi (Bethpage, N.Y./Holy Trinity) grounded into a fielder's choice, which scored junior Donnie Dlabola (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau C.C.) from third.

In the eighth, with the bases loaded, Dlabola drew a walk to score Rovinetti who hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to lead off the inning. Then after an out, sophomore Jose Reyes (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) ripped a double to left that knocked in Proscia and Figueroa.

Rovinetti led the Eagles at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. It was the 13th multi-hit game for the senior this season. Reyes came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in.

Sophomore Tim McCarthy (Waterbury, Conn./Kennedy) pitched four innings of relief to pick up his second win of the season. McCarthy (2-3) gave up only three hits and two walks, while striking out three, in relief of junior Matt Keiser (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug), gave up four runs, one earned on just two hits and one walk, in four innings. Keiser was perfect through three innings, retiring the first nine batters he faced.

The Eagles improve to 3-1 against "Nutmeg State" teams, as they split a two game series with New Haven, and defeated Albertus Magnus earlier this season.

The Eagles return to the diamond on Thursday afternoon, as they travel to Felician College for a CACC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Please note, the originally scheduled game with St. Anselm College for Wednesday, April 23, at Municipal Stadium has been cancelled, and will not be made up. The Eagles return to Municipal Stadium on Friday, April 25 for a single nine-inning game with Bloomfield College, at 3 p.m.
