Baseballs Falls To New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn.-New Haven's Tom Rombilus went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, leading the host Chargers past the Post University baseball team 9-1, Thursday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.

With the win, the Chargers improve to 16-16 overall, while the Eagles fall to 11-21.

New Haven struck first scoring runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Rombilus drove in a run with an RBI base hit, and Jimmy Rivas knocked in the second run with a single.

The Eagles cut into the Charger lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.) led off with a single up the middle, then went to second on a ground out, and came home, when junior first baseman Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) singled to centerfield.

New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and two in the seventh and eighth innings.

Conto led the Eagles at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Sophomore shortstop Jose Reyes (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) went 1-for-3. Freshman Rob Perry (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) went 1-for-2.

The Eagles, planned to get their pitching staff some work, and used six pitchers in the game. Sophomore Michael Wolfe (Ringwood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) started and gave up one run on four hits in two innings. Wolfe (3-3) recorded four strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to Municipal Stadium for a three-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) series with University of the Sciences, on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. each day.
