Baseball Falls To Felician, 6-5 In 11 Innings

WATERBURY, Conn.-Junior third baseman Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, Colo./McCook C.C.) went 3-for-6 with his seventh double of the season and two runs batted in for the Post University baseball team in a 6-5 loss to Felician College in 11 innings on a cold and cloudy Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

With the win Felician improves to 13-15 overall and 6-5 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) while the Eagles fall to 11-18 overall and 3-7 in CACC play.

Vinnie DiBenedetti singled through the left side of the Post infield in the top of the 11th inning, then went to second on a sacrifice-bunt, and went to third, when Mike Libretta reach on an error. After an out, Schoer singled and went to second on an error, pushing the winning run across.

Junior second baseman Dan Luisi (Bethpage, N.Y./Holy Trinity) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Eagles, while sophomore shortstop Jose Reyes (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior DH Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, Conn./Southern Connecticut State Univ.) went 2-for-5 with a run batted in.

Hector Bello put Felician on the board with an RBI-single to left field which scored Schoer, who led  the inning off with a base hit to left. The Golden Falcons added another run, when Joey Algieri grounded into a double-play, allowing Jon Del Franco, who doubled to right to score.

Del Franco and Bello each had RBI-base hits in the third inning, giving Felician a 4-0 lead. Del Franco singled to short right field, driving in Marcos Torres, who singled to centerfield. Bello then popped a single to left centerfield to knock in Schoer.

The Eagles would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the third inning, as Rovinetti laced a single to right field, with runners on first and second running, to score Reyes for Post's first run of the afternoon. The Eagles added another, when junior first baseman Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, N.Y./Holy Trinity) ripped a single to the gap in right centerfield to score Luisi.

Felician tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning, with a sacrifice-fly from Mickey Zudonyi.

Post crossed the plate two more times in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 5-4. With runners on second and third, Huffine hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the Felician infield to score senior centerfielder Chris Ouellette (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) and Reyes.

Post knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, when junior catcher Joe Proscia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) hit into a double-play allowing Luisi to score. Luisi started the inning with a single, then Huffine singled up the middle, and Rovinetti walked to load the bases for Proscia.

Today's game was a makeup from a rainout on April 1. The two teams will conclude the CACC series on April 24 with a doubleheader at Felician.

Post returns to Municipal Stadium on Wednesday, April 16 for a CACC twinbill with Dominican College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
