Helm Named Women's Soccer Assistant Coach

August 15, 2006

WATERBURY, Conn.-Post University interim Director of Athletics Karin Mann, named Shannon Helm as women's soccer assistant coach this afternoon. Helm, begins her coaching career after playing four years at Fairfield University.

"Our program is fortunate to have someone of her ability, and experience," Head Coach Matt Micros said. "Shannon had great vision as a player, and as a coach she will be able to use that vision to help our players. She is also someone, our players can relate to since she has had success recently as a player."

Helm, who was a three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic team selection, played in 74 games for the Stags. As a senior, she was second on the team in scoring with 13 points, while helping Fairfield earn its fourth trip to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships.

"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to coach here at Post University with Matt Micros," Helm said. "It's a new experience for me, being on the other side of practice. I'm blessed to have the opportunity to share what I have learned playing the game throughout the years."

The pair will be reunited this season, as Micros was once Helm's coach on the club level.

She finished her career ninth in the Fairfield record book for career points with 41. Her 14 career goals are also one shy of the top-10 on the career goal-scoring list at Fairfield.

As a senior, she finished second on the team with five assists, and third on the team with four goals. She tallied the game-winner against Maine and Saint Peter's, and had the opening goal in the MAAC semifinal against Loyola.

In the 2002 season, she finished eighth in the MAAC with 15 points (five goals, five assists), and recorded a two-goal, two-assist outing against Saint Peter's.

Before her collegiate career, Helm played four years for Cheshire High School. She was the team captain as a senior and was a two-time All-Conference player. She led the team in scoring on two occasions.

Post opens the 2006 season, on Thursday, Aug. 24 against New Haven in the Connecticut Cup at the University of New Haven. The Eagles will also tangle with the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Post will open the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, Aug. 31 against UMass.-Lowell.
