Adelphi Sweeps Post, Ragazzone Goes Deep Twice

Panthers Rally to Steal Game One; Eagles’ Comeback Bid Falls Short in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University softball team's six-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon as Adelphi swept the Eagles in a non-conference battle at LaMoy Field. The Panthers used a seventh-inning rally to take the first game, 5-4. Adelphi jumped out to a huge lead early in game two, and the Eagles' comeback attempt fell just short in a 9-6 defeat. Freshman Erica Ragazzone (Philadelphia, Pa.) went deep in both games for the Eagles.

Game One – Adelphi 5, Post 4

Ragazzone hit a two-run bomb to right field in the first inning to put Post ahead, 2-0. Victoria Wink answered with a three-run homer to center to give Adelphi a 3-2 lead in the third. Ragazzone tied up the game with a run in the bottom of the third when redshirt freshman Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) reached on an error.

Post regained the lead on an RBI single by senior Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the sixth inning. It looked as though the Eagles were on their way to a seventh-straight victory. However, sophomore Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) could not complete her fourth save of the season as Adelphi went up 5-4 on a two-run single by Jordan Catalano with two outs.

Junior Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.) had an incredible outing on the mound for Post. She had three strikeouts and gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Bonamassa went 2-for-3, walked once and scored a run for the Eagles.

Game Two – Adelphi 9, Post 6

The Panthers exploded onto the scene in game two, scoring a whopping seven runs in the first inning alone. Despite getting roughed up on the mound, Ragazzone hit another two-run bomb in the bottom of the first just as she did in the opening game. She has now homered three times in the last two doubleheaders.

Adelphi added another run in the second inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Eagles made a strong comeback effort in the fourth inning. Senior Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in Ragazzone with a single to left center to start the rally. Then senior Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) brought Kresley and Esque home with a single to make it 8-5.

Post pulled within one run in the fourth after Sclafani was able to steal home as Udris stole second base, but the Panthers extended the lead to 9-6 in the sixth, and that was all she wrote. Esque was solid in relief for Post giving up six hits and two unearned runs in 6.2 innings. Bonamassa, Ragazzone, Esque and Kresley each had a pair of hits.

On Deck: Post (16-16) will finally have a few days off before visiting Concordia for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15.
