PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Post University softball team split its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader of the season at Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the first game 9-0 before rallying for a 12-8 victory in game two. Post sits at 5-7 overall and 1-1 in CACC play on the young season.
Senior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) extended her conference hit streak to 21 games with three hits on the day. She also scored three runs and had two RBI. Junior
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) had three hits and a team-high four RBI. Junior
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored two runs and had two hits and an RBI.
Game One – Philadelphia 9, Post 0, F/6
The Rams got on the board early in game one on a solo home run by Meaghan Lewis. Post threatened in top of the fourth inning. Junior
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to left field with one out. Junior
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a base hit up the middle to put two on with one out, but the Eagles failed to push a run across.
Philadelphia pushed its lead out to 3-0 with two runs in the fourth inning. May and Bonamassa singled with two outs in the fifth, but a groundout by Udris ended the threat. Four hits by the Rams in the bottom of the fifth led to three runs.
The Eagles put one runner on in the sixth inning as junior
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) reached on a throwing error with two outs. The Rams ended the game in the sixth inning as Andrea Schell doubled to centerfield to drive in the final three runs.
Game Two – Post 12, Philadelphia 8, F/9
The Eagles came from behind for an extra-inning victory in game two. May led the game off with a single and stole second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Udris to put Post ahead 1-0.
Two error by Post in the second inning allowed the Rams to score twice and pull ahead 2-1. DeMartino walked and advanced third base in the fourth, but failed to score. Philadelphia pushed its lead up to 5-1 with runs in the fifth and sixth.
Sclafani reached on an error to begin the seventh inning. Erb followed with a fielder's choice that led to a throwing error that put runners on first and third with no outs. Freshman
Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) drove in a run with a single. Two batters later, May cut the deficit to one with a two-run single to left field. The Eagles pulled ahead 6-5 on a single by Udris. Samantha Riabko doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Post put the game away with a six-run ninth inning. Erb was placed on second to begin frame and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error. Freshman
Kimberly Yano (Blauvelt, N.Y.) singled to center field to bring in another run and put the Eagles ahead 8-6.
Udris drove in two runs on a single up the middle and Erb pushed across the final Post run with a single to left field to put the Eagles in from 12-6. Lewis tripled for the Rams in the bottom of the ninth to drive in two runs.
Post will be back in action on Wednesday, March 20 with a doubleheader against Dominican. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
