Post Volleyball Tops Goldey-Beacom 3-1 on Senior Day

Seniors Zarakas, Wilman combine for 17 kills

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team topped Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Goldey-Beacom Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Drubner Center. The set scores were 25-14, 25-14, 26-28, 25-13. Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) notched eight kills, 13 digs, two blocks and a season-high five service aces. Fellow senior Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) tied her season high with nine kills and added five digs as well as two block assists.

Freshman Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) led the team with a game-high 12 kills to go along with six digs, three service aces and a pair of blocks. Junior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) added 38 assists, 14 digs, three kills and three blocks for Post.

Sophomore Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn) opened the match with an ace, and the Eagles took command early with a 4-0 lead. After Goldey-Beacom pulled within one, three kills by Zarakas helped Post to extend the lead to nine at 17-8. The Eagles cruised to win the set 25-14 which was capped off by a Wilman kill.

A kill by Zarakas gave Post a 5-2 lead in the second set, and the Eagles maintained a three point lead at 9-6. Post then used two 3-0 runs to extend the lead to 16-9, and kills by Griffin and Zarakas guided the Eagles to a 20-13 lead. The Eagles finished the set on a 5-1 run to win again, 25-14.

Again Post jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but Goldey-Beacom fought right back to tie it at six apiece. Then the Eagles used an 8-2 run, capped off by a kill from Slyaktina to make it 14-8. The Lightning would not go away easily and pulled within one at 21-20 after going on a 12-7 run. After an ace by Griffin, Post had match point at 24-21, but Goldey-Beacom took four of the next five points to tie it up at 25 all. The Lightning scored the final three points to win the set 28-26.

Goldey-Beacom came out firing in the fourth set and took an 8-5 lead. Then, Wilman took over the match. She recorded all five of her aces and two kills as Post scored 11 points in a row to climb back on top. Up 16-10, Post ended the match on a 9-3 run to notch its sixth win of the season.

Alvarez tied her season high with 21 digs and had three service aces, and fellow sophomore Jennifer Lombardo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) also tied her season high with 14 digs. Freshmen Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) and Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) combined for 18 kills.

Kadi McCoy led the Lightning with 11 kills, 14 digs, nine assists and a pair of aces.

Post (6-20, 6-11 CACC) picked up its second consecutive victory and travels to Felician on Wednesday, Nov. 6 for a 7 p.m. match.
