Second Half Struggles Hurt Eagles In 65-61 Loss To Dominican

Latham Led The Eagles With 22 Points on 9-12 Shooting

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's basketball team dropped its third consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game as it fell to Dominican 65-61 at the Drubner Center on Wednesday night. The Eagles now sit at 9-10 overall and 7-5 in CACC play.

 

Junior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) was 9-for-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from behind the arc for 22 points to lead the Eagles. Graduate student Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored eight points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Junior Fernanda Mansilla (Ancud, Chile) had six points, eight assists, and eight rebounds.

 

The Eagles held a 60-58 lead with 2:51 remaining after Chance split a pair of free throws. Lindsey Lopez hit a three-pointer on Dominican's next possession to take a 61-60 lead. After back-to-back Post turnovers, the Chargers made two of four from the line to pull ahead 65-61 with 14 seconds remaining.

 

Mansilla missed a long three-pointer with three seconds remaining and Dominican grabbed the board to seal the victory.

 

Post took its first lead of the night after Chance made two free throws to put the Eagles ahead 16-15 at the 8:48 mark of the first. Junior Jessica Webber (Naugatuck, Conn.) hit a layup with 6:40 left to start a 15-6 Post run to close out the first half. Mansilla found Webber behind the arc as time expired in the first half to give Post its largest lead at 35-25.

 

Dominican began the second half on a 12-3 run to pull within one at 38-37 at the 17:26 mark. The Chargers took their first lead of the second period on a layup by KC Jentzen that made it 48-46 with 12:02 remaining.

 

The Eagles stole back the lead late with an 8-0 run. Sophomore Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) made a layup at 7:12 to start the stretch. Latham capped off the run with back-to-back three-pointers to put Post ahead 59-55 with 5:21 left.

 

The bench for Post outscored the Chargers' reserves 20-2. Webber led the Eagles off the bench with 10 points. Dominican led the battle in the paint, outscoring Post 38-26 and 17-6 in second-chance points. Bianca Harris led the Chargers with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 in a CACC contest at Goldey-Beacom. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
