TOWSON, Md. – Junior forward
Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) of the Post University men's soccer team was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Second Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) on Wednesday afternoon. Baccielo, the 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year, is the first Academic All-American in school history and he was one of just nine forwards in the country to be recognized.
The Daktronics NCAA Division II East Region Co-Player of the Year, Baccielo led Post to its second straight CACC Regular Season Title. On the year he netted a team-best 15 goals and 38 points. Baccielo tallied eight assists, which tied for the lead on the Eagles. Baccielo, a marketing major, sat second in the CACC in goals and points and tied for second in the league in assists. He netted two hat tricks on the season in wins over AIC (Sept. 1) and Wilmington (Sept. 22). On Sept. 24, he was named the CACC Player of the Week and a day later he picked up ECAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
On the national scene, Baccielo is ranked 11
th in total points (38) and total goals (15), 21
st in points per game (1.73) 28
th in total assists (eight), and 32
nd in goals per game (0.68).
To qualify for Academic All-American status, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher, have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution and be nominated by the school's sports information director. Additionally, the student-athlete must have been named First Team Academic All-District.
Post finished the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 13-4-5 and it appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision to fourth-seeded UMass-Lowell and Baccielo netted the lone tally for Post.
