Eagles Fall In Heartbreaker To Caldwell, 3-2

Wilman and Hayes Both Record Double-Doubles

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team fell in five sets to two-time defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Champions Caldwell on Wednesday night at the Drubner Center. Sophomore Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) recorded 51 assists on the night, the Eagles highest total since the 2007 season.
 
The Eagles looked out of it midway through the fifth set as they fell behind 11-6. A kill by Hayes capped a 4-0 run, as Post cut the deficit to 11-10 and forced a timeout by Caldwell. The Cougars pulled ahead 14-10, but the Eagles closed the gap to once again after two Caldwell errors. Rachael DiLeonardo recorded a kill to end Post's upset bid.
 
Junior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had a season-high 17 kills and 17 digs, her fourth consecutive match with double-digit kills. Senior Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) added 12 kills and 23 digs. Graduate student Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) led all players with 19 kills. Graduate student Vanessa Ramos (Milford, Conn.) recorded a season-high 15 digs. Slyaktina had six service aces in the defeat.
 
Caldwell led for most of the first set and extended its lead to as many as five at 16-11. Post answered back with a 6-1 run to tie the set 17-17, capped off by two kills by Wilman. The Cougars used a 6-2 run to put the set out of reach.
 
The teams traded points to begin the second set, Post eventually opened up a 13-10 lead. Slyaktina aced two consecutive serves down the stretch to give the Eagles their largest lead at 24-16.
 
Post carried that momentum into the third set as it opened on a 7-2 run to force a timeout. Reynolds notched two kills during the stretch. Caldwell stormed back with a 13-4 run to take a 15-11 advantage. Two late kills by Wilman pulled the Eagles within three at 22-19.
 
After finding themselves down 8-5 in the fourth set, the Eagles used a 15-5 run to pull ahead 20-13. Wilman recorded three kills during the stretch. Reynolds forced a fifth set with her 15 kill of the night.
 
The Eagles eclipsed season-highs set on Saturday at USciences in kills (62), attacks (182), and assists (57). They also tied a season-high with 12 service aces.
 
Post will be back in action for “Dig Pink” at Concordia on Friday night. The event hopes to bring awareness and raise money towards battling breast cancer. Both teams will be wearing pink to promote the cause.The match begins at 6 p.m.
