Softball Sweeps USP; Gizzi Hits 3 Run Homer

WATERBURY, CT – Post Universities Softball team swept USP in a double header Saturday. The games where the last of the regular season for the Eagles, making their record 24-18.

In the first game, Post got behind early with USP scoring two runs in the first inning. In the top of the inning Post rallied to score when pitcher Stephanie Carrillo hit a sacrifice RBI scoring Samantha Pagano.

With the score 3-2 in the 5th inning Post Eagle Samantha Canning scored and again it was Carrillo with the RBI. The game was tied at 3, but that tie was quickly broken in the 6th by USP.

Down Post went into the bottom of the 7th with the game tied at 4, after Bentson scored on a passed ball in the 6th inning. Amy Mantha singled to lead-off the inning for Post and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mantha went to third went Bentson grounded out an scored the winning run on a wild pith.
Post picked up the win in game one, 5-4.

With plenty of emotion after the first game, both teams prepared for game two.  Carrillo again pitched all 7 innings for the Eagle win. 

In the bottom of the 2nd, Nicole Gizzi hit a 3 run home run to give Post a 3-1 lead. The following inning, Post would score the eventual winner, which was one of three runs that inning.

Canning scored an unearned run. Then, Emily Archer doubled scoring Carrillo. The winning run was scored by Michelle Chadwick, who was pinch running for Archer. The RBI was credited to Bentson after hitting a single. 

Post was victorious in game two by a score of 8-5.

Athletes of the Week
Dan Luisi
Baseball
Dan Luisi has been named 2009-2010 Post University Athlete of the Year at the annual athletics award banquet. As a leader on the baseball team, Luisi set a new Post University record for career hits with 181 throughout his career. Making it even more difficult for Luisi was the fact that he finished his career playing with a wood bat, while the previous record was set entirely with a metal bat. 

Luisi graduated Post University with a degree in Business Administration.
Nicole Gizzi*
Women's Volleyball

Nicole has been named 2009-2010 Post University Female Athlete of the Year at the annual athletics award banquet. As the captain on the volleyball team and a member of the Eagles softball team, Gizzi has made numerous contributions to Post University throughout her career. Gizzi has been extremely supportive of all teams that compete under the Eagles banner. 

Gizzi graduated from Post University with a degree in Biology and will continue her education in the Respiratory Therapy program at Naugatuck Valley Community College.
