Post University to Add Sprint Football Program for Fall 2010
WATERBURY, Conn. (Nov. 17, 2009) Post University President Dr. Kenneth Zirkle announced today that the university will join the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) and compete against well-known teams, including Army and Navy.
Post University will be the only New England university to compete in the prestigious CSFL program, and the only university in the state to offer a program especially for football players who are 172 pounds or lighter.
“Sprint Football affords our students an opportunity to compete against some of the most well known universities in the nation,” said University President, Dr. Kenneth Zirkle. “The program will strengthen the leadership, communication, and teamwork skills of student-athletes who have a burning desire to play football at the college level, and it will bring yet another exciting athletic program to our small New England campus.”
CSFL currently is comprised of six teams including Cornell University, Army, Navy, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and Mansfield University.
“The Post University Eagles Football Team will be lucky number seven!” said Post University Athletics Director Anthony Fallacaro. “The addition of a football program on campus will really round out our athletic offerings. We'll be adding football to an interscholastic athletic program that already includes 15 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's sports, along with Equestrian and Dressage teams.”
CSFL teams compete in an eight-week season following NCAA football rules with the exception that student-athletes must weigh less than 172.0 lbs on a weekly basis throughout the season.
“The CSFL represents to me all that is good regarding intercollegiate athletics,” said CSFL Commissioner Stephen Erber. “We are excited to have Post become our seventh member and begin play in the CSFL.”
Post University will play two games in 2010 as part of its probationary status in the CSFL. Home games will be played at the Ray Snyder Sr. field at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury. The team's first game will be an away game against the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, Sept, 24 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
“We just can't wait to get started,” added Zirkle. “This program will further build on our commitment to preparing students for careers by giving young men who want to play football access to a high quality college education with all the benefits that a small, close-knit campus can offer.”
To support this new team, Post University will hire a new head coach, two assistant coaches, an athletic trainer, and an assistant sports information director.
